The new playground at Harbor Park has a rope-climb hill, slides, shade structures and picnic areas. Wide walkways run from it to the rest of the park, the stretch of grass and sand that most of Chula Vista still calls Bayside Park. The Port of San Diego and the City of Chula Vista opened it on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026. It is the first major piece of an expansion that takes the park's recreation area from about 12 acres to about 25.
With the playground open, the bayfront finally has a spot built for active, crowded play. Over the last two years the waterfront west of I-5 has filled in with very different kinds of places: a 39-acre nature park, a wildlife refuge you reach by shuttle, and a 1,600-room resort that sells tickets to its holiday season. Before Oct. 14, none of them was really built for a busy afternoon with kids. Harbor Park now is, and each of the other pieces works by a different set of rules.
Each Stop Has Its Own Rules
The bayfront stops sit close together, but they open, charge and fill up in different ways. These are the conditions each one lists right now.
| Place | Address | Hours listed | Cost listed | How it works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harbor Park | 999 Bayside Pkwy | 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. | Free lot parking | Playground, sand beach, fishing pier, bike paths, restrooms |
| Sweetwater Park | 845 E Street | 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. | No fee listed | Passive park, organized events not permitted |
| Living Coast Discovery Center | 1000 Gunpowder Point Dr. | Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. | $22 adults, $16 ages 3 to 12 | Reached only by free shuttle from the parking lot |
| Gaylord Pacific Resort | Chula Vista Bayfront | Varies by venue | Holiday attractions ticketed | Day visitors can buy holiday tickets |
Two rows explain why the playground matters. Sweetwater Park is the newer, larger green space, and the Port describes it as a passive park where organized events are not permitted. The Living Coast sits on a national wildlife refuge, and the refuge limits traffic to protect the animals living there. Neither one is set up for a ten-kid birthday afternoon. That leaves Harbor Park as the one place on the bayfront designed for a crowd.
What Opened at Harbor Park, and What Is Still Coming
The Port's announcement describes the playground as nautical-themed, with play and climbing equipment for kids of all ages. In the release, Board of Port Commissioners Chair Ann Moore said "the South Bay community helped shape the Harbor Park playground."
The playground came in ahead of the rest of the plan. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported these pieces still to come:
- Splash pad: set to open near the playground in spring 2027.
- North end of the park: new landscaping and pedestrian improvements in 2027, connecting the park to new street parking along Harbor Park Way, which the U-T describes as the former E Street.
- Future beach and boat launch: planned for the north end, with $4.34 million of a California Coastal Conservancy grant set aside for it.
The U-T puts the playground and splash pad in the $15 million Harbor Park Upland Improvements South Phase. The promenades being built along E Street belong to a separate $4 million North Phase. Until the north side is finished, the easiest arrival is the free parking lot at 999 Bayside Pkwy.
The older parts of the park are still there. The Port lists a sand beach, concessions, restrooms, bike paths and a fishing pier at Harbor Park. The Port's parks FAQ says fishing is allowed at all of its park fishing piers without a license. That page still lists the Chula Vista pier under the Bayside Park name.
Sweetwater Park Is the Quiet Option a Short Walk North
With the playground open, Sweetwater Park's restrictions start to look like a feature. It opened April 2, 2025, with nature playgrounds, overlooks, native gardens, sand dunes, public art and 2½ miles of pedestrian and bicycle paths. It keeps the same hours as Harbor Park, 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Put together, the two parks let one outing change pace. A family can spend the loud part of the day on the rope hill at Harbor Park, then walk or bike north for a calmer loop through the dunes. The Port describes the Sweetwater Bicycle Path & Promenade as linking Bayside Park, the marinas and the Living Coast area, and as a connection to the Bayshore Bikeway. The Port says the Bayshore Bikeway covers 24 miles of paths and on-street sections around San Diego Bay.
Chula Vista Marina View Park at 900 Marina Pkwy is a smaller option nearby. It has picnic tables, play equipment, restrooms and arbors, plus free parking in its lot and along Marina Parkway.
The Living Coast Runs on a Shuttle Clock
The refuge is the stop where timing matters most, because you can't walk in. The Living Coast's directions page says there is no dedicated trail for walking or biking into the refuge and that the shuttle is the only way in. Here is how a visit works:
- Park in the free lot just past the traffic circle on Gunpowder Point Drive.
- Wait for the free shuttle, which runs on a loop and can carry a stroller.
- Catch it between the first pickup at 10 a.m. and the last at 4:30 p.m.
- Be back at the center for the last ride to the lot at 5 p.m.
The shuttle is for paying Living Coast visitors and for people going to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service building or the walking trails. Trail visitors don't pay admission. The center is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its ticket page lists $22 for adults 13 and up, $16 for children 3 to 12, $19.80 for students and seniors 65 and up, and free entry for children 2 and under and for members. Advance tickets are not required.
The center's calendar lists its Sweetwater Safari Hike as a recurring Saturday event, with dates on Oct. 31 and Nov. 7, 14 and 21, 2026. A Saturday hike there pairs easily with an afternoon at Harbor Park, since the last shuttle back leaves at 5 p.m. and Harbor Park stays open until 10:30 p.m.
The Resort End: Music on Weekends, Tickets From Nov. 20
The Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center opened May 15, 2025. It is the biggest change on the bayfront, and it runs on its own calendar. Gaylord lists Coastal Live Music at the Atrium on Fridays and Saturdays at 5 p.m. at Oeste Bar, and live music at Marzul on Fridays and Saturdays at 4 p.m. Marriott lists Marzul Coastal Cuisine as open Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and closed Monday through Thursday.
The resort's Christmas season runs Nov. 20, 2026 through Jan. 3, 2027. It headlines the West Coast debut of ice! featuring "A Charlie Brown Christmas," and Gaylord says day visitors can attend as well as overnight guests. Ticket listings for the same dates include Snow Tubing, Mrs. Claus' Christmas Traditions, the Merry Snoopy Christmas Scavenger Hunt, Snowball Build & Blast and a Gingerbread Decorating Corner. Photos with Santa runs Nov. 20 through Dec. 24.
Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay, the RV resort that opened in 2021, follows its own rules too. Its event page lists Spookfest Halloween Part 2 from Oct. 29 through Nov. 1, 2026. Under the resort's rules, visitors must register and may be charged a $10 daily visitor fee.
